Breast Cancer Advice Center

I've heard that October is National Breast cancer Awareness month...?

Does anybody have any inspirational stories about women that have survived breast cancer? (or about ppl who didn't survive too. Thanx!

  1. I'm 30, I was diagnosed on the morning of my 29th birthday.

After my son's first birthday I weaned him from nursing and went for my yearly OB exam. She found an area of dense tissue that didn't seem to be going away (I had very lumpy breasts while nursing my children) so she sent me to have a breast surgeon check it out, just to be safe.

My breast surgeon did an ultrasound and didn't find anything to worry about, just an area of dense tissue, probably from nursing, but also common because of my younger age. For some reason (I believe it was a God thing) she decided to do a biopsy just to be safe since she had me there.

The biopsy showed DCIS, which is a non invasive stage 0 breast cancer. A mammogram the next day showed it scattered throughout the entire breast. DCIS doesn't present in lumps, it only shows on a mammogram as tiny micro-calcifications. If my surgeon hadn't done that biopsy it wouldn't have been found until it was invasive since at my age I had no reason to get a mammogram.

I'm now 1 1/2 years post diagnosis. I had a mastectomy with reconstruction a little over a year ago. DCIS is almost 100% treatable when it's caught so early.

I stay on top of self exams and have bi-yearly mammograms now to watch for any changes in the other breast, but right now I'm just enjoying life and spending time with my husband and 2 small children. I praise God everyday for the miracle He worked in my life.
  2. my grandma is a 50 year survivor,She's 102 now. my Aunt Pinky died at 36 from breast cancer.
  3. No but i would love to hear them. I had a mammogram last week...after reading about breast cancer awareness month. My last mammogram was 5 years ago...i'm in my later 40's. Today the doc called to tell me that there is a irregular mass and I need further testing. I'm a nervous wreck. I would love to hear some stories. I'm hoping mine is a false negative.
  4. I am a 36 year old survivor. I was diagnosed at age 29. I have been clean for six years. I celebrate every day!! My sister is a two time survivor.
